# Chalk Wars: Taom vs Kamui vs Master

*Three chalks, a month of play, and a conclusion that will annoy someone.*

Chalk is the cheapest equipment upgrade that actually matters. We ran the three most common cubes — Taom Pyro, Kamui 0.98 and classic Master — through a month of league and practice play.

## The Numbers

| | Taom Pyro | Kamui 0.98 | Master |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per cube | ~$25 | ~$25 | ~$1 |
| Chalks per session | 2–3 | 4–5 | 8–10 |
| Mess on cue ball | Minimal | Moderate | Heavy |
| Miscue rate | Lowest | Low | Baseline |

## What We Found

**Taom** lasts longest and marks the cue ball least. The premium price amortizes faster than you'd think. **Kamui** is nearly as good with a slightly softer feel. **Master** is fine: cheap, functional, and it gets everywhere.

## The Honest Take

If you miscue more than once a session, premium chalk pays for itself in avoided disasters. If you're happy with Master, stay there. No chalk makes a bad stroke good.

### Does chalk actually affect deflection?
Chalk doesn't change shaft deflection; it reduces miscues by keeping the tip gripping the cue ball. A miscue at full sidespin looks a lot like excessive deflection, which is why the two get conflated.

### How often should you chalk?
Every shot at minimum. Premium chalks like Taom can stretch to every other shot, but the habit is worth more than the material.
